The Saltire Awards are a volunteering awards scheme, supported by the Scottish government and facilitated by Fife Voluntary Action. They are designed to formally recognise the commitment and contribution of young volunteers aged 12-25.
All the volunteering you do through SVS counts towards a Saltire Award.
The Awards are split into four sections - the Challenge, the Approach, the Ascent and the Summit. The Challenge is the certificate for a one-off team volunteering event you take a part in, and the Approach is 10-25 hours of volunteering. The Ascent is for those ready to make a sustained commitment to volunteering with certificates being presented on completion of 50, 100, 200 and 500 hours. The most prestigious award is the Summit for an outstanding contribution to volunteering and is nominated by us, or the organisation you volunteer with. The nominations will be peer assessed by a panel of Saltire Ambassadors who decide who merits the Award.
You need to sign up online on the Saltire Awards website, add the organisation you work with as "University of St Andrews SVS" (or any other organisations) and then your personal details including your address. Please remember to update your address before claiming the certificates. International students should ideally apply at least a month before graduation/leaving home for holiday - note that redirections might not be available.
You can either download the time sheet online under "Organisations", complete it and then submit it to SVS at an office hour together with the registration form, or alternatively you could keep "My Journal" and "Submit time" on your "My Saltire" account and claim the certificates when you want to. The certificate would usually arrive in a month's time but may be more. Between May and June will be a busy time as the Volunteer Centre Fife office receive a large number of applications from the schools.
All the voluntary work you do through SVS qualifies for the Award, as well as volunteer work with organisations outwith SVS. Examples of other volunteering that qualifies is working with the Charities Campaign, ENTS, class representatives, charity shop work...
If volunteers forget to claim their certificates they can claim them within a reasonable time period - up to one year.
The certificates are processed as soon as possible. However there are "busy" times such as May/June when the Volunteer Centre Fife office receives a large number of certificates from the schools.
Thanks to the online account, volunteers can now have the certificated posted to the address choose. If paper requests are sent via SVS, then the certificates will be sent to SVS and volunteers will be able to collect them at an office hour. We can forward certificates to UK addresses, but it isn't possible to send or redirect certificates to international addresses. The best thing to do in this case is apply for your certificate at least a month before graduation.
